Fit Body, Fit Mind?

July 8th, 2009

It’s been a while since I posted my Healthy Brain blog. Perhaps not relevant to us young guns, but I’d like to argue that it is. Now is the time to make sure we age well.

So, how can we stay sharp into old age? As the below article explains, it is not just a matter of winning the genetic lottery. Please find below a summary of the article “Fit Body, Fit Mind? Your Workout Makes You Smarter“, which suggests a few things you can do that will make a difference:

READ and Do PUZZLES: memory, reasoning, and visual search. It DOES make a difference!

PHYSICAL ACTIVITY: excercise, excercise, excercise. Brain scans after fitness training showed that even relatively short exercise interventions can begin to restore some of the losses in brain volume associated with normal aging. Aerobic exercise however is the real key to brain fitness.

Be SOCIALLY ACTIVE: get involved in social groups, do volunteer work, increase your number of friends, and socialize with your relatives.

Be MORE: optimistic, agreeable, open to new experiences, conscientious, positively motivated, and goal-directed.

Piece of cake, right!? ;)

Is Clean Power coming?

July 2nd, 2009

I suppose clean power always has been around in one form or another. Whether and how soon it’s going to take over… I can’t say. I do tend to notice more and more initiatives.

For example, Amsterdam is not the only case where garbage is used to power trams. A British town employs an electric garbage truck that is powered by the same garbage that it picks up.

You can also take a look at this short article including a video on Chad Maglaque, who invented a small wind turbine that can be installed on homeowners’ rooftops and submitted it in a Google contest.

Another great idea that is in my view our inevitable future if we are to survive and thrive, is the linking of renewable energy resources around the world. This initiative is promoted by the non-profit research and education initiative GENI. You can check out their YouTube video here >>.

Do also check out these You Tube video’s on new renewable energy projects that are in the pipeline:

Or take a look at these two articles on more radicale ideas:

Hope you enjoy the video’s.

Great free internet tools

June 16th, 2009

www.symbaloo.com
For me, the easiest starting point on the internet. Basically a website that visualizes your Favorites/Bookmarks, and makes them accessible from any computer.

www.weebly.com
I’m using this website in order to improve www.freshnewsblog.com where I’ll be offering some free documentaries and other stuff. It’s easy to use, free, and the functionality is great. If you want to build a website, but you’re not sure how, it’s worth checking out.

2brightsparks Synchronizing Software
Another free little program that I find very useful is SyncBack. As I always work off of a USB stick (since I’m always using different computers at different places), this program basically synchronizes the USB-stick contents with a particular folder on my laptop as soon as I plug it in. You can download it directly here >>.

FreeMind (Mind Mapping Software)
Another little free program, that you might find interesting is FreeMind. Check it out. It’s a good way of typing things up that’s a bit more visual and creative than MS Word. It works for me.

www.ibood.com
Internet’s Best Online Offer Daily basically has 1 product on sale every day. The products are from time to time really nice, and always half price compared to everywhere else.

I know a lot more great resources online. So feel free to ask if you’re interested in anything particular. I’m also always on the lookout for new stuff that’s useful, so if you have a good tip, please let me know. You can leave a comment below.

Why discipline yourself?

June 9th, 2009

As Tony Robbins presents in Unleash The Power Within, we all have 6 basic human needs: certainty/comfort, variety, significance, connection/love, growth, and contribution. The way we satisfy those needs however, I think varies from person to person.

A few months ago I read the book Emotional Intelligence by Daniel Goleman, which I can recommend to anyone. What stuck with me after reading this book is that EQ is not so much being emotional yourself and/or sensitive to other people’s emotions, but being able to understand, use, and manage your own and other people’s emotions, something that takes quite a lot of discipline. Daniel Goleman argues EQ to be a bigger determinant of success than IQ.

Managing one’s emotions is a big part in the below video, which is great :) , so please read on… Basically, there are 2 main ways in which one can satisfy their needs, immediately or at a later date. This is called immediate or delayed gratification.

There are many resources available on this topic, but I really urge you to take 5 minutes to watch Joachim de Posada’s video about an experiment on delayed gratification – and how it can predict future success. It includes a priceless video of kids trying their hardest not to eat a marshmallow.

Enjoy, let me know what you think of it. Leave a comment below.

USA & Iran

May 13th, 2009

Almost 2 months ago US President Barack Obama issued an unprecedented video appeal to Iran offering a “new beginning” to diplomatic engagement with America. In his special video message he addressed, in Farsi, all those celebrating Nowruz, or “New Day.”

Meanwhile however, Obama has extended sanctions against Iran for one year, saying it continues to pose a threat to US national security (source >>).

Iran’s supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei dismissed President Barack Obama’s New Year’s greeting to the country, saying that despite Mr. Obama’s words, the U.S. hasn’t shown any sign of “genuine” change in its “hostile” policies toward Iran (source >>).

To me, these two facts do put Obama’s message in a different perspective. If you’d like to read a more in-depth view on this topic, please read article The Next War: Donkerdoorn vs Daan de Wit on DeepJournal.com.

You can also take a look at this TED video of Bruce Bueno de Mesquita predicting Iran’s future through use of a Computer System based on Game-Theory Mathematics.

Let me know what you think about it.

Downloading Movies

May 12th, 2009

It was a few years ago now that my IT-guru cousin explained to me what torrents are and how I can optimize my movies-hobby by downloading movies from the internet for free. He laid down a few simple steps for me that have made watching movies really easy and without cost. I’d like to share these steps with you if you’re not yet making full use of this opportunity.

1. Broadband internet connection!

2. Decent equipment. Personally I have an old Pentium PC connected to my flat screen TV. With MediaPortal, wireless mouse and keyboard, TV starts having a new meaning. You can also get an External Hard Disk with an integrated Media Player that can also be connected to your TV, see for example here >>. And if you don’t mind watching movies on your laptop, that will do just fine then.

3. Movies. Keep a little Notepad file of the movies you’d like to see. If you’d like to check what’s out there, I recommend www.IMDB.com. They also have great Now Playing and DVD & Blu-Ray overviews that allow you to follow all the releases.

4. When to download? A very crucial step is to know when you can download a movie in good quality. Website that offers you this insight is VideoETA.com. If a movie is not out on DVD yet, you can select it and see when it will be. Usually, only when a movie is out on DVD, will you be able to download it in good quality.

5. DOWNLOAD. First thing to do is to download Micro Torrent from www.utorrent.com, the smallest, easiest and best BitTorrent client. Then you go to one of many torrent websites, I recommend ThePirateBay.org, search the torrent of the movie you want, and open it in μTorrent. Indications of the quality of the torrent and hence the movie itself are e.g. the movie’s size, numbers of seeders (SE), and the indications in the name of the torrent (DVD rip better than DivX, etc. – the comments on the website and a few downloads will help you figure this out).

Try it out. I’d love to know if this info was useful to you. Leave a comment. Thanks.

Assess your Personality

May 6th, 2009

Recently, through a discussion with some colleagues, I was reminded how much value I got from an MBTI personality assessment some time back. That also set me out on a course of further personal development.

I’d like to introduce you to a stream of personality theories of Jung, Myers Briggs, and most of all Katherine Benziger. I strongly recommend Dr Benziger’s book Thriving in Mind: The Art & Science of Using Your Whole Brain, which is available on AbeBooks here >>. The book will enable you to perform a basic personality assessment that will give you a really good look into your own personality.

You can also read an introductory extract of Katherine’s BTSA (Benziger Thinking Styles Assessment) on www.businessballs.com.

If you’d like to download some personality tests, you can do that here >>. If you also know some theories or resources on the net that offer short online personality assessments, please let me know. Do also leave a comment, I’d love to know about your own experiences and ideas about personal development.

Swine Flu

May 4th, 2009

What is avian influenza?
Avian influenza, or “bird flu”, is a contagious disease of animals caused by viruses that normally infect only birds and, less commonly, pigs. Avian influenza viruses are highly species-specific, but have, on rare occasions, crossed the species barrier to infect humans.

Two main risks for human health:
1. The virus passes from poultry/swine to humans, resulting in very severe disease, an unusually aggressive clinical course, with rapid deterioration and high fatality. Primary viral pneumonia and multi-organ failure are common. The 2009 virus strain causes normal symptoms of influenza, such as fever, coughing, body aches, chills, fatigue and headache, but also diarrhea and vomiting.
2. The virus could – if given enough opportunities – change into a form that is highly infectious for humans and spreads easily from person to person. Such a change could mark the start of a global outbreak (a pandemic).

How do people become infected?
Direct contact with infected poultry and swine, or surfaces and objects contaminated by their faeces, is presently considered the main route of human infection. Influenza spreads between humans through coughing or sneezing and people touching something with the virus on it and then touching their own nose or mouth.

Prevention of human to human transmission
Swine flu cannot be spread by pork products, since the virus is not transmitted through food. The swine flu in humans is most contagious during the first five days of the illness although some people, most commonly children, can remain contagious for up to ten days.
Poultry products can also be safely consumed provided these items are properly cooked and properly handled during food preparation. The virus is sensitive to heat. Normal temperatures used for cooking (70oC in all parts of the food) will kill the virus. People should make sure that all parts of the poultry are fully cooked (no “pink” parts) and that eggs, too, are properly cooked (no “runny” yolks).

For more information you can check out Swine influenza on Wikipedia or Avian influenza on World Health Organization.

Fast & Easy Home Workouts

April 20th, 2009

Expensive gym memberships, heavy commitments, lots of dedicated time, personal trainers, worrying and bad feelings… All general keywords I’ve heard from people who would like to be a bit healthier and loose some weight, but who are not very interested in sports.

I believe that even if you don’t like sports, you can still integrate daily workouts in your routine that you will not even notice. And a year later, you’ll be amazed when you see and feel the results.

Focusing only on physical activity this time, and not on nutrition, my advice for people who would like to seamlessly integrate sufficient daily physical activity in their lives would be to DAILY:

  • never use escalators,
  • use elevators only from 5 floors and up,
  • WALK distances up to 15min,
  • CYCLE distances up to 10min,
  • and work out at home or garden for periods up to 5min.

Easy to stick to, right?

Oh, and if you are not sure what to do in those 5 minutes at home, those 5 minutes that hit you a couple of times a day probably, those 5 minutes when you’re waiting on someone to get out of the bathroom, or waiting on the water to boil, or waiting on a particular SMS :) … Well check out the below videos, 2 examples of the abundance in resources online…

1. www.ExerciseTV.tv

2. YouTube of course

What is Money?

April 15th, 2009

Did you also believe that money is created by the government?

I’d like to invite you to set aside your assumptions and beliefs about MONEY, and spend a bit of time watching the below YouTube videos. Then, decide for yourself what you WANT to believe about money.

“The process by which banks create money is so simple the mind is repelled.”
John Kenneth Galbraith, Economist

Most of us believe that banks lend out money that has been entrusted to them by depositors. Easy to picture. But not the truth. No, the modern banking system manufactures money out of nothing.

Peter Joseph created a masterpiece that brings forward the truth of how the money system really works. Watch this award winning documentary on Google Video:
Zeitgeist: Addendum

“Permit me to issue and control the money of a nation, and I care not who makes its laws.”
Mayer Amschel Rothschild, International Banker

I encourage everyone, no matter what your profession is, to watch the above videos…
